Feds file discrimination suit against Gary over hiring

The suit seeks an injunction preventing the city from using discriminatory hiring, as well as an order stopping the city from refusing financial relief for the white paramedics

The federal government has filed suit against the city of Gary over alleged racial discrimination in the city’s hiring of paramedics.

In a lawsuit filed Monday in Hammond federal court by the U.S. Department of Justice, federal civil rights lawyers accuse Gary city officials of hiring seven black applicants for emergency medical technician jobs when several white applicants were ranked higher on a city list of applicants for the jobs.

The city violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by discriminating against the white paramedics because of their race, the suit claims.
